  • Colonoscopy

colonoscopy is a visual examination of the entire large intestine, also known as the colon. This exam is used to explore possible causes of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal problems. A colonoscopy is also used a method of screening for colon cancer. A gastroenterologist (GI) uses a lighted, flexible tube called a colonoscope that has a small video camera attached to the tip allowing the GI to view the inside of the entire colon. GIs can also remove polyps and sample abnormal-appearing tissue in the colon during a colonoscopy. Men and women are advised to schedule regular colonoscopies starting at age 50 and continue to get a colonoscopy every 10 years to screen for colon cancer. Patients who have a family history of colon cancer or other risk factors for colon cancer should begin screening earlier.

  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A sigmoidoscopy is an internal exam of the lower part of the large colon using a short, thin, flexible lighted tube ("scope"). It is inserted into the rectum and slowly guided into the colon. The tube, called a flexible sigmoidoscope, has a lens for viewing. It may also have a small biopsy instrument to remove tissue to be checked under a microscope for signs of disease.

  • Upper Endoscopy

Also called an EGD or gastroscopy, an upper endoscopy uses a thin scope with a light and camera at its tip, called an endoscope, to look inside the upper digestive system of the esophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine. The endoscope is passed through the mouth and down the throat to the esophagus. It may also have a small biopsy instrument to remove tissue that is then checked under a microscope for abnormalities.
