Dr. Aaron M. Abarbanell is a board-certified congenital cardiothoracic surgeon and the division chief/chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at UT Health San Antonio / University Health in San Antonio, TX. He performs the full range of neonatal, pediatric and adult congenital heart surgeries with special expertise in neonatal and infant surgery, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support (ECMO and VAD), chest-wall abnormalities (e.g., pectus), tumors of the heart and chest, airway surgery, and global pediatric cardiac surgery. Trained at the University of Michigan, Indiana University, Emory University and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Dr. Abarbanell previously served on the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, is a former active-duty U.S. Navy officer, and maintains clinical and research interests in outcomes research, cardiac surgery education, international humanitarian pediatric cardiac surgery, and improving access to care.
